Turning Point

History may be “just one damn thing after another” but as we reflect on the past, patterns emerge. Scholars give those special times names like The Golden Age of Greece or The Renaissance. In that sense, the seventeenth century stands out as a humanitarian turning point of epic proportions: science started to subdue the occult, reason allowed religious pluralism to dampen religious conflict and representative governments began to replace repressive ones. As such, the seventeenth century marked the twilight of the divine right of kings and the dawn of the inalienable rights of humans.

Turning Point depicts these historic triumphs in The Netherlands and England and the philosophies of Baruch Spinoza and John Locke. Those two philosophers were battlers and beacons for human advancement. What they and their respective countries did in the seventeenth century should be extolled. In the words of Winston Churchill: “The future is unknowable but the past should give us hope”.

Coping Mechanisms: Moderation of Trauma in Adult Survivors of Adverse Childhood Experiences

Throughout history, the most remarkable discoveries were often not the intent of the original experiment. Likewise, The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study originated from observations made during a weight-loss program in the 1980s at Kaiser Permanente’s obesity clinic in San Diego, California. Dr. Vincent Felitti, who led the program, observed a peculiar phenomenon: the participants who successfully lost significant weight later dropped out of the program and regained their weight. Upon deeper investigation, Felitti discovered that many of these individuals had a history of childhood trauma, such as abuse, neglect, or family dysfunction.

A survey in the 1990s of more than 17,000 adults found that childhood trauma could profoundly influence an individual’s lifelong health and behavior. The findings revolutionized public health by highlighting the critical role of early-life experiences in shaping future health and the need for trauma-informed care and prevention strategies.

This study is dedicated to people both male and female whose lives were negatively impacted by ACEs.

Humanism: The What, Who, Why, When and Where

Humanism: The What, Who, Why, When and Where validates that about three hundred years ago the world pivoted. It turned from a place where most people were extremely poor and powerless, with only one autocratic religious option, to a world with a huge thriving middle class enjoying political and religious freedoms. Where and when did this pivot start? What was the seminal cause?

This book asserts that the catalyst for this consequential turn is humanism, an idea spawned in Antiquity, redeemed in the Renaissance, and made “self-evident” in the Enlightenment. The book, Humanism, stresses the power of ideas in shaping history, and the heroic individuals behind those ideas. It takes the reader on a journey from the dawn of the ideals of human conduct to the emergence of modern world.
